Catalyst Dermatology Provider Jen Blais

Skin Tips on Valley News Live

Keep Your Skin In Mind

Our wonderful dermatology provider at Catalyst, Jen Blais, and our wonderful Registered Nurse Karis Johnson had the opportunity to be on Valley News Live, North Dakota Today on Wednesday morning, May 11, 2016!

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, so Jen shared tips and valuable information about what to keep an eye out for, as well as precautionary measures you should take to protect your body's largest organ, your skin!

Check out the video here.

Jen and Karis explained that skin cancer is the most common cancer in the US and the 1 in 5 US citizens will develop skin cancer at some point in their lives. Those are some frightening statistics!

Jen said the biggest things to watch for and report to your doctor is changing size, shape, or color of lesions on the body or itchy, hurting, or bleeding areas on the skin. If you notice any of these, it is best to get check out right away.
The wonderful ladies let everyone know about the great service to the community that Catalyst is providing on Tuesday May 17th from 4-8 PM. Catalyst will be offering free skin screenings on a walk-in first-come first-served basis.

This is a great opportunity to get a baseline skin check. Jen suggests getting checked every 6 months if you have a history or family history of skin cancer, otherwise a yearly check is a good recommendation.
Karis and Jen expressed the importance of protecting your skin against the sun and offered a variety of suggestions such as wearing sun protective clothing or hats, making sure you protect your eyes with sunglasses that protect from UVA and UVB rays, and wearing plenty of sunscreen.

They said to make sure that you wear sunscreen with an spf of 30 or over and that you reapply every 2 hours, even when you are going on with your daily activities. They also said that wearing a tinted moisturizer with spf protection or spf powder that can be easily reapplied is a great idea.
