Summer Skin Care

The Importance of Protecting You and Your Family

Abbie Boyle and Jen Blais Share on Valley News Live

Kristi Larson on Valley News Live stopped in at Catalyst Medical Center and Clinical Spa on June 2nd to learn all about summer skin care tips from our lovely Dermatology Nurse Practitioner, Jen Blais and Spa Coordinator/Aesthetician, Abbie Boyle.

Kristi shared that melanoma, the deadliest type of skin cancer, is on the rise in North Dakota and Minnesota and our home has some of the highest rates of melanoma, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC). It is more important than ever to take steps toward protection and prevention of this disease.

Abbie and Jen shared their tips on how to be protected and prevent melanoma for you and your family this summer:

Abbie shared some of the best ways to physically protect your skin from the harmful UVA and UVB rays coming from the sun.

Sun Hats/Sun Glasses/Sun Protective Clothing:
Keeping these pieces in your everyday schedule helps reduce the amount of sun you are exposing your skin to, especially for children.

Abbie explained that there are many different varieties to choose from but to remember to find a sunscreen that has high zinc and titanium dioxide levels. Sunscreen should be at least SPF 30. There are many tinted or non-tinted varieties. Make sure to replace your sunscreen each year, as sunscreens do expire and get damaged in the heat. It is important to remember to apply every morning and reapply ever 2 hours if you are spending time outside.
Jen explained how important it is to be aware of how your skin is reacting to the sun.

Skin Checks:
Should be done by your primary care physician or a dermatologist at least once a year to get a baseline head-to-toe exam.Self Checks: You should check your own skin monthly for any changing lesions on the skin. Jen explains that anything that is changing in size, color, or shape, or is itching or bleeding would be considered a red flag.

Treating Sunburn:
If you do happen to get burned by the sun, Jen explains that it is important to rehydrate your skin by using a cool, wet compress, moisturizing with an aloe or soy based lotion, and drinking plenty of water.
Catalyst is offering a great skin treatment to keep your skin healthy this summer.

The Sensational Summer Bundle includes the purchase of three summer glow treatments.
