Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) For A More Youthful Appearance

As we age, our eyelids stretch, and the muscles supporting them weaken. As a result, excess fat may gather above and below your eyelids, causing sagging eyebrows, droopy upper lids, and bags under your eyes. Droopy eyelids are a major reason why some people consider eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty) to remove and tighten excess eyelid skin for a more alert, youthful appearance.

Blepharoplasty can remove excess skin, muscle and sometimes fat from the upper or lower eyelids. In some cases, you might need only skin removed but not muscle — or you might need the procedure done on both upper and lower eyelids.

Blepharoplasty surgery sometimes can elevate an upper eyelid margin slightly if the heaviness of the excessive skin actually is "weighing down" the upper eyelid, causing it to droop.

Why We Perform This Surgery

You might consider blepharoplasty if droopy or sagging eyelids keep your eyes from opening completely or pull down your lower eyelids. Removing excess tissue from your upper eyelids can improve your vision and make your eyes appear younger and more alert!

Blepharoplasty may be an option if you have:

  • Baggy or droopy upper eyelids
  • Excess skin of the upper eyelids that interferes with your peripheral vision
  • Excess skin on the lower eyelids
  • Bags under your eyes

This procedure can often times be covered by insurance! If your pre-testing shows vision loss due to excess skin, most (if not all) of the procedure will be covered by insurance. Out of pocket, this procedure is $3000 at Catalyst.

What You Can Expect

The surgery is quite comfortable. Your surgeon will use numbing creams and medication to relax you during the procedure.

After the surgery, you may temporarily experience blurred vision, watery eyes, light sensitivity, puffy eyelids, swelling or bruising. Your doctor will likely suggest you use ice packs on your eyes for 10 minutes every hour the night after your surgery. Avoid straining, heavy lifting and strenuous activities. After a few days, return to the doctor's office to have stitches removed, if needed.

Many patients express great satisfaction with the results of blepharoplasty, such as a more rested and youthful appearance and more self-confidence. For most patients, results from the eyelid surgery last a lifetime!

Bruising and swelling generally subside in 10 to 14 days. After this recovery period, you will notice the youthful look you desire! If you or someone you know is interested in eyelid surgery, schedule a consult at Catalyst! We'd love to help you move in the right direction to your health and beauty goals.
