What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical procedure used to treat cosmetic spider veins and medical varicose veins. It is considered the ‘gold standard’ for treating spider veins and is also used to treat varicose veins.
How does it work?
A solution is injected into the unwanted veins causing the vein to collapse and shrink down. Once it is collapsed completely, the vein will start breaking down and eventually fade away over time from approximately 1-6 months, depending on the size of the vein and other factors.
Schedule your complimentary ultrasound vein screening! Not only will you get an honest opinion about your veins and treatment options, it will be backed by an ultrasound scan and over 20 years of experience solely dedicated to varicose and spider vein therapy.
We will perform an ultrasound to determine if you have any underlying vein insufficiency. If you have underlying vein insufficiency, next we determine if you are a candidate for medical vein therapy or cosmetic vein therapy. If deemed medically necessary, insurance coverage may be an option.
You will feel some needle pokes, and some may feel more tender than others. Most people tolerate the procedure without difficulty. This procedure does not require any anesthesia.
Patients are required to wear compression garments following sclerotherapy injections. This will help minimize bruising and helps compress the treated veins we are trying to close. You can resume your day-to-day activities, including light exercise such as walking, biking or elliptical type training.
We recommend avoiding tanning and direct sunlight, high heat environments, and heavy lifting or strenuous workouts for a few days after injections.Â
This varies from individual to individual and also depends on the number of veins we treat. Mild cases will require 1-2 sessions between 3-4 weeks apart. Some people may need more sessions if more veins are present.
While there is no permanent cure for unwanted veins, sclerotherapy can both eliminate or decrease the appearance of these veins effectively. Whether it is a cosmetic or medical condition, it is genetic. Some veins may disappear for good, and some may return.
There is also a chance that the veins do not respond at all to treatment, although this is extremely rare. Your Catalyst Medical Center vein provider will be able help you better understand vein treatments and individualize your care once your veins are evaluated.
